At The Vanguard: Episode 1 — The Vanguard Vision

Introduction

Hi, I’m Christopher Lloyd Bratten-Zappala, and welcome to the very first episode of At The Vanguard. This is a show about elevating the arts and empowering the artist in each of us.

If no one’s told you this today, let me be the first: your story matters. You have incredible art inside of you that the world needs to see. You deserve to live an amazing life. And you are capable of true excellence.

This space — this podcast — is here to remind you of that. It’s here to give you fuel, perspective, and a sense of community. And maybe, just maybe, it will help you dust off a dream you’ve left sitting on the shelf, or take the first step toward creating something that’s been living in your heart for years.

Why This Podcast Exists

I’ve always believed that art is everywhere. It’s not just painting or music or dance — it’s how you live, how you think, how you treat people, how you choose to show up in the world. Every human being is a work of art. And the way we create — through the traditional arts, through our work, through our relationships, and through the choices we make each day — this is how we understand ourselves, how we grow, how we make sense of and shape the world.

But here’s the hard truth: so many people carry an inner artist that’s been silenced, ignored, or dismissed. Sometimes by others, sometimes by themselves. I know that pain personally. I’ve lived the moments of burnout and loss, the nights when my life felt stripped down to its studs, when everything I thought I was building collapsed. And I know what it’s like to rebuild, one piece at a time.

That’s why this podcast exists: to wake up and galvanize the artist inside, to stoke that internal fire that makes you want to rise, to create, and to live more fully.

The Vision for the Institute

This podcast, At The Vanguard, is just one expression of something much bigger — the Vanguard Institute for the Arts.

I dream of a place where the arts are not just studied but lived. Where you can come to learn, to teach, to create, to perform, to be challenged, to be supported. A place that feels like home. Vanguard is a sanctuary, an epicenter, and a launchpad for all things artistic.

Imagine Hogwarts, but for artists. Or the way Apple once reshaped technology — bold, visionary, uncompromising in its pursuit of excellence. That’s what I see for Vanguard: a conservatory, a venue, a community center, and an advocacy organization, all woven together. It’s a place where the silos between disciplines disappear, and the connections between music, dance, theatre, visual art, design, and beyond come alive.

Because when art thrives, people thrive. The arts give us empathy, imagination, courage, and meaning. They remind us of who we are, and they point us toward who we might become.

My Role and Yours

So why me? Why am I the one behind this microphone?

Well, I call myself a forever student. I devour knowledge. I’ve spent my life navigating complexity with a blend of logic and creativity, weaving disparate pieces together into a kaleidoscopic tapestry. My journey has taken me through music, linguistics, pedagogy, philosophy, science, meditation, and even baking. I’ve built collegiate programs, taught countless students, and performed on stages where the magic was palpable — where every actor, musician, stagehand, audience member… every atom in the space was resonating along the same frequency. I’ve worked with countless stars of stage, studio, and screen, co-founded a production company and a volunteer choir, and initiated the development of a brand new lexicon of music theory terminology in American Sign Language. I’ve also had the challenge, and the privilege, of rebuilding my life after deep depression. That experience taught me mindfulness, compassion, and clarity. It reminded me that people are the priority—things matter most when we have someone to share them with.

I’m here as both a guide and a fellow traveler. I don’t claim to have all the answers. But I do believe I can help point the way.

And here’s where you come in. This isn’t a broadcast for passive listening. This is a call to action. Yes, I hope you subscribe to this podcast and share it with a friend. But more so, my hope is that you’ll reflect, share, engage, and let these ideas challenge you. I hope something here gives you the nudge you need to take that step toward a more fulfilling life. And I hope you find the courage to bring whatever you’ve been carrying in your heart for too long out into the world.

What’s Ahead

In the episodes to come, you’ll hear conversations with artists, educators, and creators who are pushing the boundaries of their field. You’ll also hear reflections, lessons, and stories from my own journey. Some episodes will be big and expansive. Others will be smaller and more intimate. But every one of them will carry the same goal: to elevate the arts, empower artists, and keep the flame of excellence alive.

This is just the beginning. And I can’t wait to see where we go together.

Closing

So let me close with this: the Vanguard Institute for the Arts, this podcast, this vision — it’s not about me. It’s about us. About building the world we want to live in. About refusing to let our dreams wither inside us. About creating something bigger than ourselves, and in doing so, becoming who we are meant to be.

Thank you for being here at the start. Welcome to the Vanguard. Until next time.
